What a stunning day we have in Akaroa today. Did you know that Akaroa was a popular whaling port with American and European whalers from the 1790's. There are 4 tri pots on display on the Akaroa water front (also one in the museum). They are designed to be encased in a brick oven with a fire lit underneath them, this melted chunks of whale blubber and allowed the whale oil to overflow into another tripot. It was then bailed into barrels.
