Day 51: At Anchor in the Port of Akaroa, NZ. . Akaroa is a small town set on a beautiful, sheltered harbour and overlooked by craggy volcanic hills, situated 84km by road from Christchurch. The harbour is a popular resort village and is home of the world’s smallest and rarest dolphins, the Hector’s dolphins. Probably the most popular attraction of Akaroa Harbour is the possibility of swimming with these rather friendly mammals in the natural environment. On the day, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to try this unique experience. Since they are in the open sea, you are not 100% guaranteed that they will stick around you to swim, but once we encountered one, it didn’t take long for lots more to join and satisfy their curiosity. . What is even better is to see them underwater as they come very close to you. I felt for sure full of adrenaline after the swim, an experience not to forget. .
