Cruise ships normally visited the city of Christchurch but because of the severe earthquake which had devastated the city and its port the year before, as well as the many continuing small quakes and aftershocks, the cruise ships were bypassing Christchurch and sailing into the beautiful sheltered harbour of Arakoa, a small resort village just 75 kilometers from Christchurch. There weren't the facilities for a cruise ship to berth at their wharf so we had to anchor out in the bay and use the lifeboats/tenders to ferry us all ashore.....an experience in itself!
Akaroa is an historic French and British settlement nestled in the heart of an ancient volcano and one of the most delightful places I have visited. A quaint little place and probably my favourite stop on the cruise.
