View on Akaroa, New Zealand
The French arrived at the town, formerly known as Wangaloa, in 1840. They painted their house facades colourful, gave streets French names and imported plants from Europe to establish a flair similar to towns on the coast of France. Akaroa is located on the South Island of New Zealand in the crater of two ancient now eroded vulcanoes which erupted 11-6 million years ago. Population is only around 650, but in Summer thousands of tourists and locals on vacation flood in by car or by cruise ship. If you like to experience the picturesque area more quietly, get there in winter as I did. Beautiful place with "savoir vivre" helping you to unwind.
